In Chinese employment law, the retention period is a time frame for which an employee agrees to continue working for an employer in exchange for job training; an employer may not require a retention period unless they incur expenses to train an employee. An employee who receives job training but quits prior to completing the retention period is liable to pay damages. The retention period can be longer than the employment contract, in which case the employment contract must be extended to cover the retention period.
