Marriage and Bereavement Leave

In Chinese employment law, marriage and bereavement leave are an entitlement guaranteed to an employee. Chinese policy thought strongly encourages guaranteeing this kind of leave as a means of benefiting the psychological well-being of workers, and as a means of enriching the management-labor relationship. Traditionally, 1-3 days of leave has been given for marriage or bereavement, or longer for employees whose hometowns are far from their work site.

National legislation does not provide for marriage and bereavement leave, but the benefit is recognized by numerous local governments. Guangdong for example allows 3 days of leave, but for late marriages, which for women is defined after age 23, 10 days is allowed. Additional reasonable time should be allowed to travel back to their hometown.
